Jan Comics I Read TodayAt my local library:
Mangaman (Barry Lyga and Colleen Doran): Absolutely adorable. The basics - a rift in space and time opens up and deposits a young man from a Manga comic book into “our world”. My favorite part was near the beginning when everyone would freak out whenever “Mangaman” would display his Manga tendencies complete with huge heart eyes, movement lines that fall down around him, and confusion over right to left or left to right movement. I don’t read a lot of Manga, but this was good fun!
Fullmetal Alchemist (Vol.1) (Hiromu Arakawa): This has been recommended by a lot of people, so I thought I’d give it a try. I didn’t like it quite as much as Mangaman, but I think I just need some time to get into it. It’s got an interesting plotline, but sometimes I felt a little bored. If I come across Volume 2, I would probably pick it up though.
And guess what came in the mail?
Avatar: The Last Airbender The Promise Part 1 (Gene Luen Yang and Bryan Gurihiru): I was ready to buy this book before I even saw the cover art. I love Avatar, I love comic books, and putting those together is guaranteed to get me to shell out the cash for a chance to spend some time with these characters again. After such a long drought without knowing too much about what happened post-Season 3, I tore through this tiny morsel of exposition with what can only be described as feverish delight. Toph! Sokka! Appa! Who cares if hardly any loose ends were tied up?! TOPH! I’m going to have to go through it again, but I think they’re handling the whole post-finale situation tremendously well. Also: artwork was fantastic, very similar to the show.
