    Notes “Headache”

Next on the pile of comics awesomely sent to me by Girls Read Comics is Headache. Written by Lisa Joy, Art by Jim Fern.

Headache - 78 out of 104 Root Beer Floats

My education on Greek myths is almost nonexistent for whatever reason, so I opened Headache with only vague impressions that Greek myths involve some interesting means of conception. I was confused a few times, but that may have been because some of the characters look eerily similar, so much so that I’m still not entirely sure who is on the cover. Every Greek god/goddess is super-attractive and apparently wear such tight clothing that it looks painted on. The story follows Sarah, a young woman being imprisoned in a psych ward, who has yet to realize that she is actually super-old and the Greek goddess Athena. The plot-line follows her attempts to thwart an evil plan to wipe out the human race that can be traced back to this proclamation issued by Zeus: “Know what I hate? The Internet.”

Lisa Joy writes some very snappy dialogue and one-liners. I particularly enjoyed Aphrodite’s role in the story, and the way Greek gods were incorporated into modern times. Athena, however, was somewhat of a mystery. After regaining her memories from Zeus, she flip-flops between the take-charge attitude of Athena and the clueless naivety of Sarah which didn’t allow me to really pin down what her deal is. And for gods who supposedly reside in Manhattan, the ginormous mansions they live in would look more at home in L.A. That said, the artwork is great - particularly the colors. Lots of fiery oranges and subdued blues to set the mood and it works.

    Favorite Panel, hands down:

Oh, Hades. We’ve all been there…kind of.

Anyway, for someone who needed the title explained to her (yes really), Headache was very enjoyable! Neat storytelling with some minor complaints. Re-readability: probably in 9 to 11 months.
